Shaping Up with Latin Dance

For the first time ever, SOSMentor has partnered with CONTRA-TIEMPO, an Urban Latin Dance Theater and nonprofit organization, to bring dance education to our ShapeUp students at Monroe High School. Although our physical activity workshops usually incorporate traditional athletic training, we decided to test out a new model that we knew our students would love. And sure enough, the dance classes have been a huge hit!

Not only are the students having a blast, they’re gaining a new form of self-expression, building self-esteem, and learning the value of community. The classes are led by Marina Magalhaes and Cesar Garfiaez, who both have extensive dance training and teaching experience under their belts.

Take a look at the video above to hear more from Marina about the value of dance education, and to watch the ShapeUp students in action.
